The effect of ascorbic acid on experimental acid burns of the rabbit cornea.
The corneas of albino rabbits were subjected to 45 sec, 12 mm, 2.3N hydrochloric acid burns. Of 18 eyes in nine rabbits receiving no treatment (controls), 11 (61%) developed ulceration sometimes progressing to descemetoceles and perforation. Of 17 eyes in nine rabbits receiving a daily subcutaneous injection of ascorbic acid (0.5 gm/kg), only one eye (5.9%) developed an anterior stromal ulcer. ...
متن کاملGrowth and ascorbic acid content of the chick embryo.
ASCORBIC acid (ASA) is actively synthesized by germinating plant seeds (see Mapson, 1953), and by the embryos of various animal species (refs. in Needham, 1942). Hauge & Garrick (quoted by Needham, 1931) found no ASA in the unincubated hen's egg. This was confirmed by Ray (1934), who showed that the vitamin C content of the chick embryo increases gradually after incubation of the egg. Since the...
متن کاملRegulation of L-ascorbic acid content in strawberry fruits
Plants have several L-ascorbic acid (AsA) biosynthetic pathways, but the contribution of each one to the synthesis of AsA varyies between different species, organs, and developmental stages. Strawberry (Fragaria×ananassa) fruits are rich in AsA. The pathway that uses D-galacturonate as the initial substrate is functional in ripe fruits, but the contribution of other pathways to AsA biosynthesis...
متن کاملThe Ascorbic Acid Content of the Liver in Pregnant Mice*
The mice were drawn from stock and MRC breeds, the characters of which are described in the previous paper (1) , and from the pure lines C57, CBA, C3H, and dba. As far as was possible a pregnant and a nonpregnant mouse of any one breed, of similar age, were examined on the same day, as a safeguard against any variations due to the season of the year or to changes in the quality of the foodstuff...
متن کاملAscorbic Acid Content of Rose Hip Fruit Depending on Altitude
Fruits along with vegetables are major contributors to our daily vitamin requirements. Both, fruits and vegetables are very important for health because the nutrient contribution is dependent on the amount of vitamins present in these, as well as the amount consumed (1). Vitamin C or ascorbic acid (hereafter AA) is a water-soluble vitamin, which has an important role in all processes of oxidore...
